ChairX -Boards: The Importance of Disagreement w/ Richard Hargreaves

The importance of Board disagreements

Boards have an important oversight role and directors have responsibility to all stakeholders.

They are there to challenge, help and advise the executives.

Discussions must  involve differing views or the status quo does not get challenged.  Hopefully  the board will reach a conclusion that all will back.

Fully interactive discussion: Please bring your own Board experiences to the discussion.

Richard Hargreaves

Richard Hargreaves has a PhD in Electrical Materials Science but spent most of his career the unquoted company funding world. He spent 10 years at (now 3i plc), which was the principal source of long-term capital for UK private companies until the late 1980s. He then founded Baronsmead plc, which he developed over 13 years until its sale in 1995. During this period, Richard was actively involved in the growth of the venture capital industry through the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA), where he became chairman. At BVCA he was involved with their tax incentive lobbying, which saw the birth of the Venture Capital Trust, and Barons mead's name is still on several of the best performing VCTs.

More recently, he co-founded Endeavour Ventures Ltd, which invests in young technology companies for its client base of high-net-worth individuals. He retired from Endeavour in 2018 to focus on being a professional business angel investing only in B2B software-driven opportunities.

Richard has nearly 50 years’ experience investing in young companies and helping them to grow. He is an experienced non-executive director and professional business angel with significant understanding of the US market.
